Props Due: Buckwild

When it comes to that classic boom bap production names like Primo, Pete Rock, and The Rza come to mind but I think props are due for one of my personal favourites. DITC's own Buckwild. On the low the BX representative has laced everyone from Big L ("Put On"), to O.C. ("Time's Up"), to Jay-z ("Lucky Me"),to Notorious B.I.G ("I Got A Story To Tell") and so on and so on. His resume can only be described in one word "Legendary". It's on my "dream list" to work with Buck but until that happens here are a few of my favourite joints.

On My Retro Ish!!!: New York Undercover

Back On my ish! Okay back when I used to worship the crack that is television the one show that I "NEVER" missed was New York Undercover. Every week Detectives J.C. Williams and Eddie Torres would go undercover fighting crime on the mean streets of New York City. NYU was a show that broke stereotypes often associated with Hip Hop. Williams & Torres represented individuals driven to their call of duty who also embraced the style, the music and the diverse culture of Hip Hop. Before I could hit up the club the place to see the flyest wears and the hottest artists of the time was New York Undercover. The cameos were some of Hip Hop's biggest stars such as Ice-T, The Notorious B.I.G, Mary J. Blige and so many more. Fox had it locked every Thursday. And the Soundtrack!? Strictly classic material. Unfortunately NYU's run was cut short after four years (1994-1998) but if you're lucky you can still catch the show in syndication.Times change but As always I'm "On My Retro Ish!"

Take notes, you might just learn something.

The Power Of Words - Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

Quote Of The Day: Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Quote Of The Day: Sacrifice

“There are plenty of teams in every sport that have great players and never win titles. Most of the time, those players aren't willing tosacrifice for the greater good of the team. The funny thing is, in the end, their unwillingness to sacrifice only makes individual goals more difficult to achieve. One thing I believe to the fullest is that if you think and achieve as a team, the individual accolades
will take care of themselves. Talent wins games, but teamwork and
intelligence win championships.”

Get yourself in gear,
Keep your stride.
Never mind your fears.
Brighter days will soon be here.

Chorus

Take it from me someday we'll all be free (Yeah)

Verse

Keep on walking tall, hold you head up high.
Lay your dreams right up to the sky.
Sing your greatest song.
And you'll keep, going, going on.

Repeat Chorus

On My Retro Ish: Electric Circus & Xtendamix

Back on my ish!!! During the early nineties Much Music was one of the few channels (Ch. 30 in Scarborough)that represented Toronto's growing ethnic diversity. Before the advent of reality TV no two shows represented Hip Hop, House, R&B, and Soul better than Electric Circus & Xtendamix. Electric Circus was essentially Toronto's own Soul Train and Xtendamix was the show to see all the latest videos. Every Saturday I'd tune in excited to see the best of what the world had to offer. Young and wide eyed these shows made me hip to all the new trends, fashions and dances of the time. I would dub over moms videos and keep an archive each week. Hosts Monika Deol (my first celebrity crush) and Tony "Master T" Young always kept their shows fresh and entertaining by having live performances and engaging conversations with their audiences. Master T and his assistant "Roxy" would keep me glued to the tube dying at the fact that "Roxy" was a talking keyboard. Master T also kept it live by creating crazy characters like Taurus T. Electric Circus was a trip! Imagine a club full of rhythm less people dancing. 'Nuff said. I can't lie I watched the show for Monika (wink). I thought she was the flyest big hair and all. Unfortunately both shows have gone to TV heaven but they will always bring back fond memories.

With 80's Baby coming around the corner I thought I'd drop another gem on 'em. "Generals" is the story of the underdog. My most personal track to date "Generals" is a look into my life and the obstacles I have faced up to this point. The Rez Dogz produced track became a canvas to paint my pain, my passion, and my vision upon. I blacked out, the final result was a release of years of pent up fire, anger, and frustration. Take it in.

Behind The Lens: Works Of Hype Pt. 1 - The Early Years 92-95

When we talk about individuals who have changed the face of Hip Hop we need go no further than director Hype Williams. By pushing the envelope and creating larger than life images Hype took the medium to new heights. As a true fan I've dedicated this first installment of BTL to the legend and visionary that is Hype. Here are a few of his earliest works. Enjoy.

Who am I ? : Don Von JoVi

We are born with innate gifts, our duty is to embrace our gifts and share them with the world. For Toronto's own Don Von JoVi this means provoking an emotional response through his music. Raised in Toronto's Glendower Circuit housing complexes at an early age he began soaking in every detail of his surroundings. He began honing and fine tuning his writing skills as a hobby. Listening to the messages of a wide variety of musical styles (Reggae, Soul, & Hip Hop) he became inspired to write of his own experiences. Music became the opportunity to speak on the plights he a faced on a day-to-day basis. With a talent for scripting clever metaphors and acute attention to wordplay Don Von took his passion from looseleaf pages to stages sharpening his craft by performing at various shows and open mics through out the city. He soon earned the reputation of being the next fresh face on the come up. Don Von JoVi's sound; a fusion of Soul, Hip Hop, and Rock is what makes him stand out from the pack. With no limits to the imagination, his music can be described as universal and eclectic. Aside from handling writing duties Don Von JoVi, plays the roles of vocalist and producer. A man of few words his star quality shines brightly through his music. With the release of the single; 80's Baby (Bring It Back!) Don Von JoVi is poised to bring that feel good music back to the masses.

Def Jam x adidas Superstar II – 25th Anniversary Collection – Redman

Brick-City icon Redman has long been a favorite among hip-hop heads, and now Adidas has given the Funk Doctor his own version of the iconic shell-toe Superstar. Most of the upper is blood-red, while the collar, laces, and small band around the thick rubber sole is a lighter, almost orange colored red. A comic-styled likeness of Redman adornes the tongue, his name is on the sole of the heel, the painted “R” appears on the heel in what appears to be a clear gel print, and the silver logo on the heel says “Funk Doc”. Providing some nice updates on the Superstar, the sole bottom has a nice splatter pattern, while the shell toe stays with the traditional white. Black appears on the lining, laces, and on the three stripes. A matching t-shirt is releasing as well that pays direct tribute to the artwork on the debut album, “Whut? thee Album”.
